I recently watched Notting Hill for the first time and while the storyline made for perfect Sunday evening viewing, it was the wardrobe of Julia Roberts’s character, Anna Scott, that really caught my attention. That, alongside Roberts’s frizz free, glossy, red curls, minimal makeup and ultimate fuss free style firmly positioned Julia Roberts as my style icon for 2018.
Believe it or not it’s been 19 years since we watched the characters played by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts – up there with the most iconic movie couples – fall in love in their unlikely pairing. The film left a lasting legacy worth more than just a blue door, now a top tourist photo op in London (280 Westbourne Park Road for those interested). You can also see the legacy left in their wardrobes.
However, it wasn’t just through her role in Notting Hill that Julia Roberts used to secure her position as 90s style icon. Upon witnessing Anna Scott’s various on-trend looks, I took to Pinterest and got lost in a sea of Julia Roberts’s best style moments of the 90s. She may have delivered one of the most quoted lines in rom-com history (“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy…” – you know the one) but Julia Roberts also brought to life some of the most iconic looks that are now making their comeback in the 90s renaissance of current day trends.
Apparently we’re not the only ones who noticed. At the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, Suki Waterhouse told Vanity Fair, Roberts was her style icon upon watching the film.
“If you look at the tiny, little-framed glasses she wears in the film, everyone is starting to wear tiny, little-framed sunglasses she wears in the film and the hat she wears. She’s basically wearing a new season Dior hat. She’s dressing like how I want to dress. I was absolutely obsessed with her.”

The Beret and Tiny Sunglasses
Sound familiar? Bella Hadid thinks so too. This exact combo reared its head back in 2017 and is still going wrong with the street style crowd currently.
White tee, Vans, Straight Leg Demin
I had to do a double take when this look appeared on my screen mid-way through Notting Hill. The outfit looks like something straight out of new season Topshop stock and an ensemble that’s been filtering its way through our Instagram news feeds.
The Boyfriend Shirt
It wasn’t just during Notting Hill that Julia Roberts’s characters and their style got fashion chins wagging. When Vivian slips on Edward’s white shirt over her mini dress in Pretty Woman – another iconic movie duo – Roberts’s character teaches us a thing or two about styling the boyfriend shirt – rolled up, undone and knotted.
During this mid-90s photoshoot, Roberts demonstrates how alluring simple, everyday fashion can be when you pick each piece carefully.
