Last night saw the highly anticipated moment when the Victoria’s Secret Angels graced the runway, wings et al, for the annual Victoria’s Secret show.
Once again the high profile event wowed its audience with a celebration of fashion, fantasy and entertainment, not forgetting a cast of 60 of the world’s top models who showcased the latest collection from the lingerie brand.
Of the 60 models who participated, notable names included the legendary Angels, Candice Swanepoel, Josephine Skriver, Romee Strijd, Stella Maxwell and Taylor Hill. Model of the moment, Kendall Jenner joined the models on the runway following a casual family rehearsal that saw the Kardashian clan don the VS wings for Halloween a week prior to the show. Jenner was joined by Gigi and Bella Hadid who made a return to the runway while several new faces nervously made their debut.
Among the new faces this year was Winnie Harlow who told Fashionista ahead of the show what it meant to be part of the VS family this year.
“Being able to see all of these legendary women walking before me, and being able to walk in their footsteps is everything to me, so I’m really honoured to be a part of this show.”
Endearingly she also spoke of the camaraderie and support among the women, who despite the highly competitive nature of the industry, feel nothing but proud of one another.
“I’m excited to see all of my girls walk. I was saying to everyone yesterday, I wish we could be in the audience to cheer for each other. We got to watch each other rehearse yesterday and it was so much fun, and we were all yelling for each other and recording each other. I wish we could do it again, but, it’s okay. We’ll be backstage cheering each other on.”
Elsa Hosk, who has walked in the show eight times this year, had the honour of wearing the 2018 Fantasy Bra made by Atelier Swarovski, worth a casual $1 million. Made up of 2000 diamonds and taking over 930 hours to make, unsurprisingly it dazzled under the lights and made for an all round stunning creation.
The biggest news of the night however, was that of Adriana Lima’s retirement from Victoria’s Secret. The 37-year-old Brazilian beauty and OG Angel made the decision following a 20 year career with the the brand including 18 catwalk shows. Since first becoming an ambassador and muse for the lingerie brand in 2000, she’s only ever missed one show in 2009 when she was pregnant. Over the years she’s been so committed to the job that in 2012, she walked the show a mere 5 weeks after giving birth.
During the show which took place in New York City’s Pier 94, Lima had an entire segment (complete with a montage of her walks over the years) dedicated to her as well as a solo victory lap of the runway one last time. The news was made official earlier today when Lima posted a bittersweet farewell to the brand on her Instagram. The message read, “Dear Victoria, thank you for showing me the world, sharing your secrets and most importantly not just giving me wings but teaching me to fly.”
Over the course of her 20 year career as a Victoria’s Secret Angel she’s become a role model to her international fan base and to the influx of new models who’ve joined the Angels each season.
