That Leather Look

The most dominant of fabrics; leather is a look that means business.

There are few textiles that can be chic, sexy and a little bit badass the way leather can so from skirts, to trousers and trench coats and the most covetable of all this season – the leather dress (invest now) – it’s time to fall back in love with the material this winter.

Loewe

It was all over the AW catwalks. Pleats took centre stage on the Loewe catwalks with Northern Ireland designer, Jonathan Anderson sending models out in supple leather ensembles including an over-the-top black maxi dress with a built-in bustier.

Over at Miu Miu it was short and sassy with leather dresses dominating, futuristic at Balmain thanks to experimental silhouettes and rock ’n’ roll at Saint Laurent with figure fitting jackets and barely-there shorts. Hermès had a military take on the trend while Stella McCartney experimented with shape and contrasting fabrics.

Saint Laurent

When it comes to colour black is always a classic but other chic choices include petrol green (à la Alexander McQueen), ox blood red and all shades of brown.

While there will always be some who prefer the real thing, synthetic leather (PU) has come on leaps and bounds making it an ethical and affordable way to rock the trend.

Luxurious and grown up this trend works best with a material mix. Pair with silk, soft cottons, furs or sheer fabrics to ensure it looks sophisticated rather than sleazy and if you’re wearing a shorter hemline opt for an oversized sweater, opaques and ankle boots to balance your silhouette.
