Review: Up Next On Netflix

There’s a good month or two left of slightly grim winter weather, so the cosy evenings indoors, snuggled under a blanket still have some life in them yet. I’ve long forgotten any whisper of FOMO, choosing to happily enjoy some much needed downtime with zero regrets!

Netflix has put out a few series of late that might, until now, have been off your radar; shows that are totally worth ducking out of dinner plans early for. Seriously, these shows have me calling it quits after happy hour, excited to get home to unwind under the covers…

DARK

We actually watched this series during our Mexico vacation in December. One night even staying up until 3am indulgently ordering middle-of-the-night room service because it was just that binge worthy. Set in a small German town, don’t let the subtitles put you off, it also has a dubbed audio track. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things, I’ve had friends claim Dark is even better. I’d say it’s a hard one to call. If you like mystery, time travel, and some mind-bending cliff hangers, this is a series for you to get your teeth into. It’s recently been renewed for a second season and I, for one, can’t wait!

TRAVELERS

While we’re on the theme of time travel, Travelers really caught my attention. When I couldn’t find my earbuds during my last flight, and with the last 3 episodes of Season 2 downloaded on my phone with no way to watch it, I had a minor flip out in the airport. If you’re a fan of Eric McCormick (Will & Grace), this series has him playing an FBI agent sent back in time with a team to help change the future. It might seem like a story you’ve heard before, but I just couldn’t stop watching. Give it a shot. Season 2 just came out, so you have plenty of viewing hours to watch.

SCHITT’S CREEK

I’ve actually watched this show at least twice, it leaves me in stitches. The creators, a hilarious father/son duo that is Eugene (American Pie) and Dan Levy, have really nailed this plot. When a rich family goes broke, they have to accept a ‘new normal’. Those eyebrows on Eugene Levy – I gotta say, I’m gonna admit it – I find them pretty endearing. Any fan of Home Alone will love Catherine O’Hara’s performance and her absolutely amazing, yet insane, wardrobe. It’s truly a masterpiece! You better start watching now so you can be ready to go for the Season 4 premiere hitting Netflix November this year.

OZARK

Jason Bateman, you are so handsome, but it’s crazy to see you in something that isn’t a comedy – yet you do it so well. This drug cartel drama set in the Lake of the Ozarks in America had me on the edge of my seat. I watched it with my future in-laws, which I don’t recommend. There’s a fair bit of nudity, and let’s get real, any amount of nudity is too much when you’re sitting in the living room with your in-laws. Nevertheless, it passed the test of a truly binge-worthy show and had us repeating “one more episode?” well past bedtime. Season 2 comes out later in 2018.

THE GOOD PLACE

What do you think of Kristen Bell? The more I see her in interviews and on her Instagram account, the more I truly dig her. Any chance you saw the amazing video she and her husband put together during their trip to Africa? It’s pretty much #relationshipgoals. The Good Place makes this list for being a show you can put on while you’re getting ready, cooking dinner, cleaning up, etc. You don’t have to be glued to your TV to enjoy it. Kristen plays a woman sent to ‘the good place’ and it might have been a huge mistake. The episodes are short, the premise is silly, and you’ll find yourself laughing as you’re curling your hair instead of dreading getting to the office. What could be better than that?
