IT’S BOOT SEASON! And this season’s trends have been some of my favourite to date. With the likes of Gucci, Jimmy Choo and Valentino bringing new life to the trend, now is the perfect time to invest. It’s all about having fun with your footwear and freshening up some old friends. From patent leathers to the flared heel, there really is something for every outfit, taste and style. However, finding a shoe to fit around an outfit or, if you’re anything like me, finding an outfit to fit around a shoe can be a little stressful. So, I’m here to fill you in on the top trends this season, where to find them and how to style them for work, day or play.
SOCK IT TO ‘EM
Undoubtedly one of the biggest trends this season has been the sock boot – a slightly unattractive name, but still. There’s an amazing variety in this trend across many of my favourite retailers. Check out Topshop, Public Desire and my beloved ASOS for an amazing selection of colours and prints. The sock boot adds a really fresh twist to the classic ankle boot and it’s far more versatile than most people think.
For work: Pair with a pencil skirt to compliment the feminine shape of the boot.
For day: Team with skinny jeans for a more casual, but classy look.
For play: Dare to bare your legs (and cover your ‘cankles’ at the same time). I always find a dress with a fuller skirt looks super cute with a fitted sock boot.
For me, over the knee boots are one of the chicest winter trends. Nothing says classy, comfy and, most importantly, cosy more than a tall boot. I’ve noticed lately that a lot of people, even very stylish individuals, seem hesitant when it comes to making the most of this trend and I get the impression that ‘pretty woman’ springs to a lot of peoples’ minds when they see an over the knee boot. Well, they’re wrong! I happen to think that, when styled correctly, the over the knee boots is the furthest thing from the film and the likes of Kurt Geiger, ASOS and Office clearly agree.
For work: Style your boots with a gorgeous knitted jumper dress for a stylish and smart look.
For day: Team with your favourite jeans and a cute and cosy jumper.
For play: Stick with dark jeans or a simple, classy frock that compliments the silhouette of the boots.
One of the bravest, boldest and, as the name suggests, blatant shoe trends this season is patent leather. This season’s catwalks, shops, and our very own streets have been abundant in stylish ladies making a blatant statement with patent. Topshop, Zara and River Island have truly nailed the trend this season. From classic blacks to daring reds and mirrored silvers, this statement trend works from the shoe upwards adding a little extra element of glamour to any outfit.
For work: A Prince of Wales check skirt and tights is the perfect work combo for a patent day in the office.
For day: Team your boots with mom jeans for a super comfy, but equally stylish look.
For play: Add glitz to your glamour with some festive sparkle that will reflect off your boots all evening!
SHOW A LITTLE FLARE
For those of you who may be less keen on our other trends, the flared block heel is definitely the one for you. It’s the perfect way to add a retro edge to your wardrobe. With the flared heel being adopted by a variety of boots styles this season, there’s the perfect retro boot for everyone.
For work: Pair your flares with high-waisted tapered trousers to keep your retro wheels rolling.
For day: Try a leather legging to really seal the deal on this trend.
For play: Welcome everyone to the sixties and team your boots with a super-stylish wide leg trouser.
Personally, I can never get enough of the velvet vibe. Whether it’s a dress, skirt or jacket, velvet is the perfect way to add a vintage twist to any outfit – and the same is true when it comes to footwear. For a true luxe feel, check out my top picks of this season’s velvet boots.
For work: Give your velvet boots a try with a vintage-style pinafore – practical and pretty.
For day: Velvet and denim is a dream pairing, so stick to jeans – distressed denim will add to the vintage appeal.
For play: Experiment – pair velvet boots with a velvet smock or skater dress for social occasions (just make sure the colours compliment each other).
Whether you’re aiming high, or making your statement at ankle height, there really is a boot for everyone this season! Take my advice; be bold as we enter a fresh year – let your boots do the talking (rather than just all the walking)!
