While the effects of UV light are well known, less realised is the damage that blue light – strong light from screens on smartphones, computers and other devices (as well as fluorescent and LED lighting) – can cause.
Research suggests that blue light may penetrate deeper into skin than UVB rays, and trigger damage that contributes to wrinkles, sagging, hyper-pigmentation and other signs of ageing.
Blue light is all around us, from the sun’s rays to man-made devices. The sun emits significantly more blue light than our favourite technology but the amount of time we spend in close range to electronic devices is taking this exposure (and its associated risks) to new heights.
So every time you snap a selfie or scroll through Instagram you’re exposing your skin to the risks…
Dr Howard Murad – an American dermatologist to celebrities including Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Lopez – claims that spending four days in front of screens that emit harmful blue rays is the equivalent to 20 minutes in front of the sun.
He suggests looking for products and sunscreen that contain the ingredient lutein as this helps protect from blue rays. He advises that people can also ‘eat’ natural sunscreen through fruit like pomegranate, goji berries, watermelon and pink grapefruit, which helps reduce sun damage.
To make things easier more and more beauty brands are now catching on the need to offer a solution to this lifestyle challenge.
