Once a playground staple, this season fashion is all about the return of the hairband.

Given the industry’s recent tendency towards ‘ugly’ and controversial trends (think cycling shorts and chunky trainers to name a few) the innocence and femininity associated with the hairband trend brings with it a whimsical breath of fresh air.

This season it’s all hairbands over handbags as hair accessories have become this season’s most coveted designer items dominating the entry-level designer purchases scene. As once worn proudly by fashion and (fictional) New York elite, Blair Waldorf, who are we to refuse a classic hairband? It has the power to transform an otherwise basic outfit. Polish up jeans and a tee or go all out, adding a bit of personality to an otherwise professional monochrome look. And honestly? It’s pretty much the new dry shampoo in its ability to hide a bad hair day.

Wondering where the trend came from? We’ve got Miuccia Prada to thank. Thanks to Mrs Prada the girly hairband has established itself firmly within the grown woman’s style repertoire. For a full history of the trend check out Vogue’s article on How To Wear The Headband Trend.
