Tailored Swift – The Denim Redux

James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, Marlon Brando in The Wild One, Brad Pitt in Thelma & Louise – the perennial appeal of denim is indisputable.  Denim trends vary from season to season from the high-waisted styles of the 80s to bootcut silhouettes in the 90s and today’s embellished, embroidered and tailored versions. Gucci’s adorned denim jackets scream fierce AF, upcycled denim from Vetements is the fashion blogger’s BFF and classic styles from Levis are never out of style.

While denim is a style staple, it can be adapted to one’s individual style. I love to get creative and mix it up a bit.  Pairing denim with tailored separates is something every guy should try out. Add a pop of interest to your look by teaming jeans with a suit jacket or a denim shirt with a suit. Elegant and individual? Win-win sitch right there.

Here are my four favourite denim-driven outfits that nail that tailored-meets-casual look:

Tried and Tested – A Vintage Affair

Steal the style from the T-birds in Grease or Elvis in Jailhouse Rock with a vintage style denim jacket. This look is perfect for a chilled out day in the office when a blazer is just too much hassle. Taking you from desk to disco, you’re sorted for all occasions. Shed the tie and button down the shirt for an even more relaxed look. Perfect for after work drinks, date nights and more, this is the look that keeps on giving.

Get Shirty – Swap ‘n’ Shop

Swap out your usual shirt for a denim number. Play around with different shades to complement your suit. Choose wisely – no crumples, tie dye or frays. Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to this fabric but keep in mind the office dress code.

Double Denim – Double Trouble

Double denim AKA the Canadian Tuxedo can be hit or miss. It’s not to everyone’s taste. Make sure you’re meeting your own style criteria and fine-tune the other details. I like to combine mine with a crisp white shirt, a knitted tie and double-strap monks, sneakers work well too. Don’t pick identical shades but stick to slight variations in hues.

Jean Genius – Eschew the Trews

Last but not least, swap out your smart slacks for your favourite jeans. Keep all the other elements the same. Jeans are ideal for casual Fridays or a more relaxed office environment. Adaptability is key – pick a style that is comfortable and classy – that works as hard as you do.

There you have it – denim by numbers. It’s easy to incorporate and experiment with denim. Up your style cred, stay comfortable and exude confidence. You’re worth it!
