Rightly or wrongly, we’ve felt a rebellion against denim shorts brewing for a while now. Finally, it’s spread further than the ranting and raving of our WhatsApp groups and infiltrated the summer trends sweeping the fashion industry.
There’s a lot wrong with denim shorts. To clarify, we’re talking about the short, short kind, the kind that shot Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister to fame in the early 2000s. We’ll excuse the longer denim biker shorts that high street brands and designers are favouring this season which although still not ideal on the chafing front, we’ll let off the hook due to the comfort provided by their extra inches of length. Plus, at least they protect your modesty, unlike their shorter counterpart that we’re so ready to wave goodbye to.
Given the side effects of (short) denim shorts, quite frankly, we’re surprised we wore them for as long as we did. Now synonymous with festivals and unattractive wedgies (for lack of a better word), it’s within the best interest of everyone’s health and happiness that we open our eyes to trying new shorts styles this summer.
An exception we will make to the denim shorts strike is if the shorts in question have passed the squat test, the sitting test and cover our derrière in a way that’s both flattering and attractive.
And because we know that deep down, despite our protesting, we aren’t entirely ready to give the denim shorts up cold turkey, we thought we’d share our new favourite trick for nailing the right fit for your denim shorts. It’s a little more effort than simply picking them up off the shelf and throwing them into your case but we promise it’s worth the effort in the long run.
All you’ve got to do is size up (usually only by one size) when buying your denim shorts of choice in order to cover your bases on the length front. Then it’s a quick trip to the tailors to have the waist taken in and voila, your own, ideal, customized fit of denim shorts that look and feel good all summer long.
